Components of the Draeger SCBA Ensemble
Proven components and worn by thousands of Firefighters worldwide, the Dräger SCBA receives updates to meet the 2018 Edition of NFPA 1981 and 1982. Announced on Sept. 30, 2019, the 2018 Edition requires some changes to the Dräger SCBA.
Update to the connection between the lung-demand valve (LDV) and full-face mask
The lung-demand valve (also called the regulator) includes two buttons on either side where it fits into the full-face mask. The 2013 Edition contained a single button on the mask itself. The buttons operate independent of one another, but both must be pressed simultaneously in order to unlock the LDV from the mask. The new collar housing for the buttons serve as a guide to make it easier to fit the LDV into the mask’s connector.
Pneumatics operate at a greater temperature range
The remarkable engineering in the pneumatics received improvements that allows the SCBA to operate at a greater range of temperatures.
Universal connectors on the Buddy Breather
Although a Universal Emergency Breathing Supply System (UEBSS) — better known as the Buddy Breather — is not required, it’s an option that many Fire Departments choose to include. The Buddy Breather allows two Firefighters to share a single air source. Although not a significant change for Dräger, NFPA certification to the 2018 edition of the standard required all manufacturers to use the same male and female connectors that Dräger has been using for many years.
Draeger PSS 7000 Carrying System
The Draeger PSS 7000 carrying system makes the use of this vital equipment easier on the wearer with ergonomic comfort that includes height-adjustment, pivoting at the waist, and more easy adjustments for every size or shape of Firefighter.
The supportive waist belt includes a floating action to keep the SCBA at a lower center of gravity as the Firefighter moves, twists, reaches, and other actions, meaning less stress on the wearer. Made of flame-resistant, rubberized materials, the straps and belt are easy to clean on the fire ground.
In less than 60 seconds, the entire unit can be disassembled (and reassembled) without the need to use any tools which enables detailed disinfecting at the station. The back frame houses all the upgraded pneumatics and protects hoses from potential snags.
The Draeger PSS 7000 is part of an SCBA ensemble certified to the 2018 Edition of NFPA 1981 and 1982.
Draeger FPS 7000 Full-Face Mask
Designed to offer optimal visibility, the Draeger FPS 7000 full-face mask sets new standards with 180-degree, panoramic visibility with the large distortion-free polycarbonate visor using heat-resistant thermoplastic.
To prevent fogging of the visor, the innovative design provides an even distribution of air across the mask. To accommodate faces of different shapes and sizes, the FPS 7000 is available in small, medium, and large. Additionally, the inner mask that covers the nose and mouth comes in three different sizes.
The mask comes in highly chemically resistant rubber with a hairnet designed to be donned and doffed quickly and easily. The FPS 7000 full-face mask is a required part of the SCBA ensemble meeting the 2018 Edition of NFPA 1981.
Draeger Sentinel 7000 PASS and Monitoring System
An all-in-one distress signal unit and pressure gauge, the Draeger Sentinel 7000 is an electronic unit that provides continuous monitoring of operational status of a NFPA-certified SCBA (2018 Editions). All information is brought together clearly and rapidly on one easy-to-read digital display.
The lightweight device fits snugly in the palm of the hand, with large, easy-to-operate buttons, even when wearing gloves. Pressure and remaining air time are permanently displayed on the Sentinel 7000; the remaining estimated air adjusts based on the wearer’s current rate of consumption.
When triggered, the Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) flashes lights both on the unit and on the carrying systems. The alarm sound, certified to the 2018 Edition of NFPA 1982, emits from both the Sentinel and speakers on the carrying system.
Draeger PSS Lung-Demand Valve (LDV)
The 2018 Edition of NFPA 1981 requires an update to the lung-demand valve. The new version incorporates two independent buttons on each side. The Firefighter must press both large buttons at the same time to release the LDV from the Draeger FPS 7000 full-face mask.
If a wearer presses one or the other button, the LDV remains locked in place. The connection between the mask and LDV is non-indexing, meaning the LDV can be inserted at any angle. Once locked in place, the LDV and the connecting hose can be turned 360 degrees.
With muscle memory, a Firefighter can hit the doffing button to turn off air flow and the two buttons to remove the LDV with one gloved hand.
Draeger PSS Head-Up Display (HUD)
The Draeger FPS 7000 Head-Up Display connects wirelessly and automatically to an SCBA without any manual action by the wearer. The HUD is required as part of the 2018 Edition of NFPA 1981 with any certified SCBA ensemble.
Red, amber and green LED lights provide feedback just on the periphery of view and flash at regular intervals to keep the wearer updated on cylinders air pressure. The display automatically adapts, making sure the LED lights are brighter or muted based on the ambient lightness or darkness.
The HUD snaps easily into the Draeger FPS 7000 full-face mask without tools. If required, the HUD can transfer between different face masks in a matter of seconds. With an average of 360 hours of use, the battery can be easily changed without any tools.
Draeger Carbon Composite Cylinders
Included in the 2018 Edition of NFPA 1981, Draeger carbon composite cylinders are manufactured and tested in accordance with the most technologically advanced processes available. SCBA includes a Draeger 30 minute high pressure, 4500 psi, carbon cylinder.
Draeger Universal Emergency Breathing Supply System (UEBSS) or Buddy Breather
The Draeger Universal Emergency Breathing Supply System (UEBSS), also known as a Buddy Breather, enables two firefighters to share a single source of air. An option that can be added to any SCBA unit, the pouch containing 40 inches of hose along with a universal male and female connector. is located on the waist belt.
The 2018 Edition of the NFPA standards require that all SCBAs use the same type of connectors, so universal aid is available, no matter the manufacturer of the SCBA.
Draeger Cylinder Quick Connect
The Draeger Quick Connect option for SCBAs means exactly that — replacing the threaded compressed gas association (CGA) with a quicker connection.
Line up the male connection on the cylinder to the female receptor on the SCBA unit and press firmly until it snaps into place. A Firefighter is ready to go. To disconnect, a quarter turn and press on the ring around the female connector of SCBA unit and lift the cylinder.
